Your CV and interview skills are the two main weapons in your arsenal to impress your potential employers. CV writing is a form of marketing or advertising yourself. Your CV must sell you to a prospective employer, and compete against other, therefore CV writing become more challenging and to be more appealing and attractive than the rest.

Your CV is the first point of contact between you and your would be employer. It is essential to make a lasting impression through your CV, as it is the first step towards landing your dream job. Some key elements to be included in your CV are:

  1. Contact Information: The first section of your CV should contain your contact information, such as your name, address, phone number, and email address. Accurate and updated information should be provided.
  2. Personal statement or objective: A CV should start with a brief objective or personal statement. This should summarize skills, experience and job expectations.
  3. Professional Summary: A professional summary should be a brief statement about your experience and qualifications. It should be specific to the job you are applying for and highlight your strengths and accomplishments.
  4. Education and Qualifications: Mention your education and qualifications in reverse chronological order, starting with the most recent you have obtained.  Add the name of the institution, your degree or qualification, and the dates and year you attended.  If you have any professional qualifications then you can also include here and add the impact in your CV.
  5. Work Experience: Your work experience section should list your previous work history in reverse chronological order, starting with your most recent job. Mention your job title, the name of the company, the dates of employment, and your key responsibilities and achievements. In case, you have a lot of work experience, give the job titles and select carefully about which responsibilities and achievements you wish to highlight. Mention Job details that are short and relevant for the Position you're applying.
  6. Skills: Your skills section should include any relevant skills you have that relate to the job you are applying for. Be specific and mention any software or technical skills you possess.  You can highlight the languages you can speak, write and understand and any other professional skills you might have that may be helpful to play the job role you are applying for.
  7. Awards and achievements: Any award or achievements received should be highlighted that will demonstrate your success and achievements
  8. Professional memberships and affiliations: Any professional memberships or affiliations should be listed to demonstrate your expertise in your field.
  9. References:  Two or three references should be included at the end of the CV. A reference can be included after seeking the permission. Full details of the reference including full name, job title, company, phone number and email address should be included.

Interview Skills

During an interview, you have the chance to demonstrate to a potential employer that you possess the necessary skills, experience, knowledge, and qualities to carry out the job duties effectively. Articulate how you can contribute to the organization's success and express your specific interest in working for them. Additionally, evaluate whether this organization and the job align with your goals and aspirations.

Once you have caught the employer's attention with your CV, the next step is to ace your job interview. Here are some interview skills that will help you stand out from the crowd.

  1. Research the Company: Researching the company you are interviewing with is essential. Go through their website, social media handles, and any other relevant sources to get an idea of their mission, values, and work culture.
  2. Dress Professionally: Dress professionally for your interview. A neat and well-pressed outfit can make a great first impression.
  3. Be on Time: Punctuality is essential. A candidate should arrive on time for interview. If possible, arrive a few minutes early.
  4. Prepare for Common Interview Questions: Prepare for common interview questions beforehand. Practice your answers to questions like "Tell me about yourself, "What are your strengths and weaknesses?" and "Why do you want this job?"
  5. Ask Questions: Prepare a few questions to ask the interviewer about the company, the position, and their expectations. Asking thoughtful questions shows that you are interested in the job.

Dos of CV Writing:

  • Personalize your resume for the position you are applying for.

Don'ts of CV Writing:

  • Don't include irrelevant information.
  • Don't exaggerate your accomplishments.

  • Don't be late for your interview.
  • Don't speak negatively about your previous employer.
